Chapter Twenty-Two

DEVANNA

I sat on my favorite barstool in Scallywags three weeks after Orion had been removed from office, listening to the raucous conversations that filled the bar. The threat of Nergal and Errakal still hung over us, but until they showed their hand, there wasn’t much we could do but carry on with our lives. Tonight, everyone was light and happy, still reliving the utter chaos we’d caused to drive Pascar out of town yesterday, embracing the feeling of success and distraction it afforded us.

“The look on Pascar’s face when she saw Belphie?” Val said, mimicking her scream like Kevin from Home Alone before he slapped his hand down on the counter with a laugh. “That was a stroke of genius. Belphie is hideous.”

“Don’t let Endymion hear you talking about his baby that way,” Blaze chuckled. “His attachment to that creature is almost as intense as your love for Edward Cullen.”

“Love blinds you, I suppose,” Caedmon said with a sigh. “I still don’t understand why Bella looked twice at Edward Cullen when Jacob was right there, growling and flinging his luscious hair around.”

“You’re aware of how completely toxic those relationships were, right?” I said, unable to contain my opinion on Twilight a second longer. “And don’t get me started on the vampire c-section. That was the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen in my life, and I’ve lived here for most of it. I’ve seen a lot of dumb shit.”

Val and Caedmon gasped in unison, moving away from me with hurt expressions, but someone needed to say it. Now that I knew they were vampires — something I still had approximately ten thousand questions about — I understood their obsession, but I never understood why everyone glamorized that series.

“Your claws are showing,” Blaze murmured, wiping down the counter. “That was mean, even for you.”

“Should I hiss at you then? Give you the whole picture of an angry cat?”

“Fine, just be a Devvie Downer today,” Blaze said as Morgaine dropped into the seat next to me. I eyed her, but didn’t say anything. While she’d always taken care of me when I needed it growing up, Nimue’s mom and I weren’t the closest. Mo loved to overstep, meddling in our lives when she thought we needed a good shove in the right direction, and there was nothing I hated more than someone trying to manipulate me, whatever their intentions.

“Dark and Stormy, dear,” Mo said, smiling brightly at Blaze. “And make it special for me. You know how I like it.”

By that, she meant damn-near deadly for anyone but her.

The elderly-yet-ageless witch had raised both Blaze and Nimue, which made more sense after discovering the witch was from the original Coven of witches that Linked with a demon. I was willing to bet Mo had inherited more than a drop of demon blood, encouraging her many mischievous ways.

“What is it you want to say?” I asked after she sat quietly for a minute, smiling at the other patrons.

“Me?” Mo blinked wide eyes behind her enormous turquoise glasses, the picture of innocence.
